What is Adas?
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are electronic systems in a vehicle that use advanced technologies to assist the driver. They can include many active safety features such as, automatic braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and blind spot detection to name a few.
How does it work?
ADAS is a system made up of various components, sensors and controllers, which together ensure the correct and safe movement of the car, while informing the driver of various hazards. Thus, such solutions are able to comprehensively support car users while driving. The operation of the system depends primarily on its components, among which the most commonly used are:
-
windshield cameras – which are responsible for obstacle detection, automatic emergency braking, operation of active cruise control, adjustment of lights to road conditions, and more;
-
radar sensors – which assist the cameras by measuring the distance to obstacles;
-
ultrasonic sensors – which are used for functions such as parking assistant.
When does it need to be calibrated?
All adas systems need to be calibrated after removal/replacement of one of its sensors or cameras.
One of the most common requirements for calibration is after having a windscreen replaced(as the camera is mounted onto the windscreen and it has to be swapped from the old screen to the new one), but in a lot of cases radars need to be calibrated after bumper removal or vehicle collision and even wheel alignment.
newer cars with 360 degree cameras will need calibration after a wing mirror replacment.
