Timing belt replacment
A Timing belt(or cam belt as its known) is a rubber toothed belt which connects an engines crankshaft and camshaft(and often drives a water pump).
The belt is installed in a specific position in order to synchronise the shafts running in tandem.
If this belt breaks it can lead to complete engine failure, which is why it is important to replace the belt at manufacturers recommended intervals .
At Tyrrell's Auto repairs we specialise in timing belt repairs and replacement and have invested heavily in specialist tooling to carry out belt replacement on most makes and models on the road.
We always insist on using genuine/oe equivalent quality belt kits and offer a comprehensive parts and labour warranty on all belt replacments.
Timing Chain
replacment
A Timing chain carries out the same function as a belt but uses a steel chain instead of a rubber belt.
The supposed benefits of this are that the chain is supposed to last the life of the vehicle( it dosent come with a set time/mileage to replace it), unfortunately these chains fail quite regularly (by stretching or snapping).
Sometimes you may get a warning where the chain rattles, espiecally when the engine is first started, other times the chain can break without notice.
Since the chains are not designed to be replaced regularly, it is typically quite a big job to replace and genrally a lot more expensive to replace than belts.
The main factor in causing chains to stretch is using the wrong specification of engine oil or not servicing vehicles regularly.
